My Journey to JOY

I’m Amy Evans!
Authentic Leader and Spiritual Conduit
From an elementary teacher, to an Author and to a Certified Energy Healer.
As an elementary teacher for 30 years, my passion was helping children discover their authentic selves. Now, I work with adults who are looking to experience the results of journeying within to reconnect with their authentic selves.
- 1986: Graduated University
I was hired right after graduation by York Region District school Board. I remained with the Board for the length of my thirty year teaching career. The first ten years of teaching were extremely demanding. I wanted to be my personal best for my students and for my family. I kept an exhausting schedule and set aside the renewal practices of journaling, reading and meditation for what I thought were more important priorities. Over time my intuition began to let me know that I had gotten off track. My physical and emotional well-being felt diminished. In 1997, I decided to take a sabbatical from teaching. During this four year sabbatical, the Journey to Excellence was born.
The first year of my sabbatical was a time of reflection
I had no idea at the time, how long I would be away from teaching or what I would do with my time off. Other than the immediate commitments and responsibilities of my own family, I cleared my schedule. While the kids were at school, I rested. In the first six months of my sabbatical what I remember most is giving into the exhaustion. I gave myself permission to nap, journal, reflect, walk and anything else that I was inspired to do.
By the end of the first year I began to receive ideas for a poem. I had never written poetry before but the ideas were so vivid that I began to record them in my journal. Over time the ideas took form on the page. When it was finished I called it When I was Born. I was unaware at the time that this poem would be the beginning place of the Journey to Excellence program. Over the next months and years, I continued to make my renewal practices which now included writing, a priority.
Ideas continued to come to me during quiet reflective time. I felt excited by these ideas and was inspired to begin recording them in my journal. As I began to do this, I can only describe it as a portal opening within me. Streams of ideas and content began to flow into my mind almost on a daily basis. There were times of clarity when I knew exactly what I needed to write and how to write it. A powerful memory of this receiving of information was when In the early stages of my writing I was inspired to gather up my materials, books and computer and take a two week writing trip away from my family.
I lived at a very special mentor’s house whose name was Sue Wilkinson. She was a dear and long time friend of my mom. Her and I met months before at a holiday dinner at mom’s house. I had just completed my poem and was excited to share it with everyone around the table. Sue loved the poem and said that we should create a children’s book from it. She was a talented artist and was willing to do the illustrations. I shared with her, my dreams of a program of well-being based on Universal Principles and involved Sue in the formatting of my writing as I started to make the transition from journal to computer. As I prepared to go to Sue’s house, the format and content of my program started to reveal itself to me. I could see it in my mind’s eye as if it was already created. I knew what resources I would need to refer to and I knew that my ten years of teaching and creating activities on self-empowerment would be reflected in this new work. It was a daunting undertaking but I felt energized, confident and inspired.
This first draft of the program was called the Journey Within and it took me two years to complete. During the years of my sabbatical, my personal life went through transition. In 2003 my marriage ended and I moved to a townhouse with my teenage children. The Journey Within was set aside as I adjusted and settled into a new life. That year I began a new relationship and I returned to full time teaching. My life was busy but I remembered to include the renewal practices that were now an integral part of my life.
- In 2005, I uncovered a teaching resource buried deep in one of my moving boxes.
A colleague had asked to borrow it. I flipped it over to see who had published this resource and the publisher’s name caught my attention. It was a publisher specializing in Character Development. I had a strong impulse that same day to package up my draft and send it off to them. My work was accepted and published in three volumes. The publisher changed the name to Journey to Excellence.

- Volume one published in 2006
- Volume two published in 2007
- Volume three published in 2008
The Journey did not stop there.
The Journey to Excellence program continued to evolve and reveal itself to me in new ways over the next 16 years. The first publications were a compilation of classroom activities that I created to teach children self-esteem and well-being. In 2012 I decided to buy the rights for my program back from the publisher and recreate it.
Over the months that followed, the core of the program revealed itself to me. I realized that there were 7 Life Skills in each book, Uniqueness, Intuition, Reflection, Visualizing, Goal Setting, Mentors and Community Service. These life skills at their core were Universal Principles. They were introduced sequentially at first and then all integrated together in their application. This revelation was exciting and felt like the next logical step in the evolution of the Journey to Excellence. Over the next two summer breaks, I rewrote the program to include the 7 Life Skills.

- 2014: I began to have a vision in my mind of a stacking toy.
It was a colourful toy with 7 rings. I drew the stacking toy in my journal, not knowing why or what it represented. It was a month later that I had the realization. The stacking toy was meant to be a symbol for the Journey to Excellence program. The stacking toy is a universal toy, known by most parents and children. Its rings are nestled into one another in a graduated and sequential way. It was a perfect symbol for the 7 Life Skills.
Not long after, I was strolling through Indigo Book store when I spotted the stacking toy. It was the one from my journal. It was a multi-coloured wooden stacking toy. It had 7 colourful rings and a red ball on top. I bought the stacking toy that day and found an engraver who was willing to engrave the 7 life skills, one on each ring. At the top, on the red ball, she engraved the words Authentic Self. Over the years, this stacking toy has adorned many classroom shelves, not just as an attractive decoration but as a tool to teach the 7 Life Skills.
The last few years have been busy creating a new version of the Journey to Excellence. In 2015 I met Stephanie Ratti, a new colleague and brilliant teacher who had joined our staff. The Journey to Excellence has been used by teachers since its inception. The feedback from my colleagues has been an integral part of its metamorphosis over the years. Stephanie was introduced to the Journey to Excellence program when she came to my school. She asked me to come to her class once a week to model the teaching of the program. She had an opportunity to observe the Journey to Excellence in action and the positive impact it had on her students. After that experience, she elected to create detailed lesson plans for the program. She then was able to teach it to the junior and intermediate students at our school in her role as teacher-librarian. Throughout
Throughout its development, I had many inquiries about the program from parents.
2017 — 2018
I created a parent booklet to guide parents on how to integrate the 7 Life Skills into their personal and family lives.
2022
I was inspired to create the Journey Within Workshop for adults that teaches the 7 Life Skills with a deeper emphasis on the Universal Principles embedded within them. The 7 Life Skills have revealed themselves to me through the living of my life, all of my life. First as a young child, then as a teacher and parent and now in creating this workshop for you. It is my hope that the 7 Life Skills will assist you on your joyful journey to discovering your Authentic Self.

A Joyful Journey of Self-Discovery and Soul Connection.
Learn about the Universal Principles, a new way of life that spreads kindness through authenticity and builds the confidence that creates stronger communities.
